VW Exhaust Recirculation Fault

VW Exhaust Recirculation Fault

Imagine driving your VW when suddenly it loses power, and the engine management light illuminates your dashboard.

It would be pretty scary, huh?

That’s precisely what happened to a recent client’s VW Golf.

Thankfully, they chose to bring their vehicle to our VW experts at P. Breading Motor Services after hearing about us from a friend.

At P. Breading Motor Services, our technicians are VW specialists. We have decades of experience working on all VW models, and there isn’t a problem we can’t solve. Whether you need a simple oil change or something more complex like a turbo fix, we can help.

When the client brought their Golf to our experts, our experienced technicians were familiar with these symptoms and were confident they could diagnose the problem accurately.

Investigation and Diagnosis

When our client arrived at P. Breading Motor Services, they spoke to our technicians and explained her VW Golf would lose power intermittently while driving, and the engine management light would come on.

They also noted that turning the engine off and then on again temporarily resolved the issue, but the problem would soon return.

Our experts knew the issue was putting the client’s safety at risk and wanted to address the problem right away.

At P. Breading Motor Services, we pride ourselves on our comprehensive 15-step diagnostic process. Our meticulous approach helps us identify the exact cause of the problem during your first visit.

During the initial inspection, our VW specialists began diagnosing the client’s VW Golf with a test drive. We managed to witness the issue first-hand and understood the problem our client was facing.

Leveraging their extensive experience, we wanted to run a diagnostic test to see if any fault codes were present. They also accessed the vehicle’s serial data.

As your local independent VW specialist, we have access to the same technical information as the main Volkswagen dealerships. This allows us to provide dealership-level servicing at better value.

The initial analysis revealed the following fault code:

  • P0403 00 – EGR Valve (N18) – Malfunction

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, vital for reducing emissions, can fail due to various factors such as electrical issues, mechanical malfunctions, or clogging.

The serial data download pointed our technicians towards potential issues with the EGR valve, prompting them to investigate whether it was an electrical fault or a physical blockage.

Upon visually inspecting the EGR valve, our technicians discovered significant soot accumulation at the valve’s inlet and outlet pipes, indicating there may be a leak of some sort.

If there is a leak present, it could result in the exhaust gases escaping.

After digging deeper into the VW’s problem, we tested the EGR valve’s function. During the testing, we compared the EGR valve’s function against manufacturer specifications. This comparison revealed discrepancies in the electrical data, suggesting a problem with the valve’s electronic response.

Although the wiring and signals from the engine control unit (ECU) to the valve were intact, the EGR valve was not responding as expected, indicating an internal electrical issue.

The diagnosis confirmed an electrical fault in the EGR valve and that it would need to be replaced.

Final Fix

Now that the issue had been identified, our experts contacted the client to discuss our findings and to offer a solution.

The client was pleased that we’d found the root cause of the problem so quickly and agreed to have the EGR valve replaced.

Upon removing the EGR valve, our VW specialists observed a significant accumulation of soot inside the valve, which was substantial enough to impair its function and cause the vehicle to lose power.

Our experts cleaned the area and replaced the EGR valve with a genuine VW replacement.

At P. Breading Motor Services, we only use genuine VW or high-quality alternative parts for all servicing and repairs. This allows us to provide your vehicle with the level of quality it needs to operate at its best.

After installing the new valve, we reset the vehicle’s warning system and took the VW Golf for a road test to ensure the issue was entirely resolved.

Thankfully, the dashboard warning never appeared, and the VW power loss problem was solved.

The client was overjoyed to hear their vehicle’s fault had been solved quickly. In fact, our experts solved the issue within the first day, allowing the client to drive away only 24 hours later.

At P. Breading Motor Services, we often have faster turnaround times than the main VW dealerships. This allows us to provide dealership-level servicing at better value without drawn-out wait times.
