Range Rover P25A9 Fault
Mr J’s 2018 Range Rover Velar had shown no signs of trouble. Everything had been running as normal. But then the engine management light appeared on the dashboard, along with a warning message linked to the engine oil system.

This can bring on the engine management light and produce an oil-related warning message, even when the oil level is perfectly normal. The warning is connected to the engine’s ability to control oil flow to the piston cooling system. It does not necessarily indicate that oil is low or missing.
With the fault code recorded and the warning behaviour understood, our technicians moved on to a focused investigation to find the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.
Tracing the Fault Through Detailed Inspection
The fault code had given our technicians a clear lead for the P25A9 Range Rover diagnostic. However, an open circuit code doesn’t pinpoint the exact location of the fault. The wiring, connector, valve, or another part of the circuit could each have been responsible. Our technicians tested each one in sequence.
Step 1: Checking manufacturer technical data

Step 4: Oscilloscope testing of the circuit
Our technicians connected an oscilloscope to assess the electrical integrity of the wiring between the engine control module and the piston cooling oil control valve. This measured signal and supply behaviour under live conditions, rather than relying on a static resistance check alone.
- The wiring tested within expected parameters, confirming the circuit between the control module and the valve was intact.
Step 5: Testing the piston cooling oil control valve itself
With every other part of the circuit now cleared, the valve remained as the focus. Our technicians used dealer-level diagnostic software to command the valve to activate and monitored its response.
- The valve did not respond as expected. Testing confirmed an electrical failure within the valve, identifying it as the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.
Each part of the circuit had been tested and accounted for. The wiring and connections were all sound, and the valve was the sole component at fault.
How the Piston Cooling Oil Control Valve Failure Was Repaired
With the diagnosis clear, our team called Mr J to explain the findings.
